Porcelain Onlays
Porcelain onlays are ideal for posterior teeth which have adequate
strength or tooth structure remaining for a bonded filling. Onlays accomplish the same purpose as a crown (or cap) for restoring function and strength, but with additional, important advantages.
Onlays are more conservative than the traditional crowns which cover the entire tooth and require significant tooth reduction. With an onlay any decay, cracks, or old silver fillings are removed. Any remaining, sound tooth structure is untouched.
Once fitted, the onlay is bonded to the tooth with a high-intensity light. This restores the original strength, function, and natural appearance. Since onlays are a non-metal restoration, the chance of metal allergies (like those associated with traditional porcelain to metal crowns) is eliminated. Onlays usually do not extend below the tissue, like traditional porcelain to metal crowns, therefore promoting better periodontal health.
No eating restrictions are necessary with onlays. Your new restorations are maintained in the same manner as natural teeth: regular brushing, flossing, and dental prophylaxis. If you would like to discuss the possibility that you may be a candidate for onlays, schedule an appointment or call 207-947-4767.
